The largest operating expense of the organization are the two-day biennial symposiums, held in even numbered years at locations in the United States. Also, an operating expense is incurred for the production and mailing of the bi-annual newsletters, two of which are distributed each year, one of which is mailed to all members. Other operating expenses are incurred for communications, legal, accounting, professional fees, and other expenses.
The MSUD Family Support Group Research Fund
The Research Fund is used to fund research projects deemed worthy by our Scientific Advisory Board and with the approval of the Board of Directors. A listing of past, current, and future projects consistent with our research plan can be viewed under the research menu of this site.

Hello everyone! My name is Herb Foster, but everyone calls me Butch. My wife Diane and I are the parents of three children, two of which were born with classic MSUD – our son, Scott, and our daughter, Katelyn.
Scott was the first person in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be diagnosed with MSUD by newborn screening. At the age of 22, Scott developed a case of the flu. Complications resulting from his MSUD resulted in his death. Scott was one course away from completing his associate degree, which was bestowed upon him upon his passing. While on his college breaks, he interned at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and was hired as a motorman driving the Rapid Transit Trains on the Red Line.
When my son Scott passed away after coming down with the flu, our family was devastated. We then started the Scott C. Foster Metabolic Research Fund, now a part of the MSUD Family Support Group Research Fund. Later the MSUD Family Support Group teamed up with the Million Dollar Bike Ride run by the University of Pennsylvania Orphan Disease Center to support research efforts for orphan diseases. This was a godsend to me as I got back into biking and again was raising money for MSUD research . This year, my 2 Gran Turismo biking partners and I plan on riding 77 miles in honor of my 77th birthday. I will keep riding my bike to raise research funds once a year until I cannot ride anymore. I
The Board of Directors of the MSUD Family Support Group are on a mission to make lasting medical improvements to help all MSUD families everywhere. It has been a long journey for many families holding on to hope for their children. We are being very proactive, but we need research funds to accomplish our mission.
I am appealing to all families that raised funds for the Million Dollar Bike Ride in the past to get back on your bikes or come up with your own fundraising ideas! If you are unable, please consider a donation to the MSUD Family Support Group research fund.
Together we can make a difference. God bless us all as we continue this long journey and pray that we will all see a very bright future for all children born with MSUD.

Please include a donation form that indicates how we should allocate your donation and indicate if you would like your contribution to go toward the General Fund, the Research Fund, or the Million Dollar Bike Ride fund. If you have no preference, the default fund will be the Operating Fund.
Remember to check with the HR department of your employer to determine if they have a program to match your donation. Also, don’t forget to reach out to your family and friends and encourage them to donate to the MSUD Family Support Group. Personalized letters are the most effective tool. You may want to include a picture of the individual affected by MSUD. See the sample letter to model your letter after if desired.
